Oracle Beefs Up Its Machine Learning With DataScience.com Acquisition

The DataScience.com platform will be added to Oracle Cloud infrastructure to enhance its machine learning (ML) capabilities. Combined, end-users will have access to the data science platform capabilities while also being able to leverage Oracle’s cloud infrastructure and use the machine learning tools alongside Oracle’s Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offerings.

The DataScience.com platform centralizes data science tools, projects, and infrastructure in a fully-governed workspace. It helps IT teams, primarily those working on artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics, to coordinate work remotely. Members of these teams can share computing resources on its platform to build out data science workflows and other AI technologies. The data science tools on the platform are open sourced.

After the acquisition closes, Oracle will work with DataScience.com to build more functionalities into the platform and better align and integrate its offerings with Oracle’s products.

This acquisition marks a continued effort by Oracle to integrate AI and ML into its cloud infrastructure. In October of 2017, it unveiled its AI Platform Cloud Service and AI-powered applications. And in November, it added high-performance computing, big data, and AI to its enterprise public cloud in an effort to keep up with the evolving and increasingly competitive marketplace.

In March of this year, CTO Larry Ellison teased new autonomous cloud services coming in 2018. This includes the addition of “analytics, mobility, application development, and integration” services to its PaaS offerings, Ellison said.
