JavaScript continues to be the most popular programming language among developers. RedMonk’s first quarter 2018 rankings report has listed the 10 most popular programming languages.
Even the last year’s list had JavaScript in the top position. The scripting language continues to be the most popular language among programmers. The rankings report is based on pull requests in GitHub and an approximate count of how many times the language is tagged by the developer on Stack OverFlow.
Apple’s open source language, Swift is the new entrant in the list. Apple’s language has made a great progress from 46th position last year to the 10th position. According to RedMonk, the top 10 popular languages are - JavaScript, Java, Python, C#, C++, CSS, Ruby, and C, with Swift and Objective-C. Similarly, TIOBE’s top programming language index for March consists of more or less same set of languages in a different order. TIOBE’s index has listed following languages in descending order - Java, C, C++, Python, C#, Visual Basic .NET, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, and SQL.
Google’s back-end system language, Go is equally popular among developers. However, the experts believe that Go doesn’t have the versatility of Java as a back-end language. In fact, the open source Kotlin has received a great boost from Android developers. Kotlin has graduated from 65th position to 27th position in RedMonk’s list.
Microsoft’s scripting languages PowerShell and TypeScript have also climbed the ranks. However, neither of them is among top 10. Microsoft’s language has progressed in terms of growth because of the massive developers' community that backs company’s development platforms.
